Student Support

At Whangārei Boys’ High School, every boy is known, valued, and supported. We take a holistic approach to student support, recognising that young men learn best when their academic, emotional, physical, and social needs are cared for together.

Our systems are proactive, relational, and responsive, ensuring boys are supported to grow with confidence and resilience.

Inclusive Learning – Te Ako Āwhina

Te Ako Āwhina is our inclusive learning and support service, working alongside classroom teachers to ensure every student can access learning and experience success. Support may include reader-writers, modified materials, quiet learning spaces, individual learning plans, and targeted interventions. Te Ako Āwhina is more than a learning support centre. It is a safe and supportive environment where students build confidence, develop strategies for learning, and are supported to integrate successfully into senior classes. Led by skilled education professionals, Te Ako Āwhina focuses on strengths, solutions, and pathways forward, empowering students to overcome challenges and thrive.

Student Voice

Student voice is valued and actively encouraged at WBHS. Through Prefects, the Student Council, and other leadership groups, students from every year level contribute ideas, provide feedback, and help shape school life. These structures give boys meaningful opportunities to lead, advocate for others, and drive positive change, while ensuring the school listens to and acts on student perspectives.
