Co-Curriculum

Whangārei Boys’ High School offers a wide range of co-curricular opportunities that develop leadership, teamwork, creativity, service, cultural identity, and personal excellence beyond the classroom.

We strongly encourage every student to belong to at least one co-curricular group, whether a club, committee, performing group, or academy. With more than 60 activities available, boys are able to explore new interests, represent the school, serve the community, and build strong connections with others.

Participation in co-curricular life plays an important role in developing confidence, leadership, and a sense of belonging. It also strengthens pathways beyond school, with sustained involvement and leadership recognised by universities, apprenticeship providers, and employers.

Arts & Culture

The Arts and Culture programme at Whangārei Boys’ High School is vibrant, inclusive, and highly successful. Students are encouraged to express themselves creatively, work collaboratively, and represent the school at local, regional, and national levels.Annual highlights include the Festival of Performing Arts, senior drama productions, Fideliter Jazz Band concerts, Smokefree Rockquest, the Chamber Music Contest, and the Sheila Winn Shakespeare Festival, where students regularly achieve national recognition.

Cultural performance is a strong feature of school life through Te Aka Matua Kapa Haka and the combined WBHS/WGHS group, Te Kapa Rau Aroha.

Students in visual arts, photography, and digital design consistently achieve success through national scholarships, exhibitions, and competitions.
