Year 12

Owning Your Pathway

At year 12 there are usually five or six subjects of complete choice. Students drive their own learning, select endorsement targets and often add work-based or tertiary courses. The main point is at this level they are on or close to a target for the future. Though many still explore possible opportunities.

As freedom and accountability increase, boys choose subjects they are passionate about and capable of, aiming for NCEA Level 2 and maybe course endorsements. Teaching is highly flexible, both in lecture style, seminars, workshops, and online components, and often, independent research is common. There is strong guidance through exams also. Many add Gateway placements, STAR-funded courses or Trades Academy one day a week. Time management, self-advocacy and goal-setting become critical as boys prepare university, scholarship or workforce applications.
