Student Stories

Our international students come from around the world and bring their own stories, interests, and aspirations to Whangārei Boys’ High School.

Each journey is unique, but all are grounded in belonging, opportunity, and connection.

Group 243

Nicolas

Nicolas joined Whangārei Boys’ High School for two terms through an education agent. During his time with us, he lived with a welcoming homestay family and embraced the wide range of academic, sporting, and cultural opportunities on offer at WBHS.

Haruto

Haruto joined our kura for a one-term group stay with his school in Japan. He was carefully matched with a host family who shared his interests and quickly settled into school life. During his time at WBHS, Haruto balanced his academic goals with exploring new subjects and experiences.

Youtao

Youtao began his journey at WBHS in Year 10 and plans to return in 2026 to complete his secondary studies before continuing his education in China. Living with a designated caregiver, he has spent much of his secondary schooling with us and continues to feel a strong sense of belonging within our international student community.

Cultural Enrichment

International students at Whangārei Boys’ High School have the opportunity to take part in a range of enriching experiences throughout the school year. These experiences allow students to explore Aotearoa New Zealand beyond the classroom and gain a deeper understanding of local culture and place.

Depending on the length and timing of their stay, students may take part in experiences such as an overnight marae stay, visits to Rotorua, ski trips, the Bay of Islands, and other regional excursions. These opportunities help create lasting memories while supporting cultural understanding, independence, and connection.
