TRANSPORT TO SCHOOL
BICYCLES
Students who bike to school are expected to follow the traffic rules of New Zealand and wear approved safety helmets. On arrival at school, bicycles must be placed in the bike compound by the Technology block. Students are responsible for securing their bicycles.
BUS TRANSPORT
There are a number of buses provided by Ritchies Transport and controlled by Whangarei Boys’ High School. These serve the outlying areas around Whangarei with the southern-most point serviced being the Maungakaramea turnoff. Transport further south (Waipu / Ruakaka / Bream Bay) is provided by Leabourn Passenger Services.
Students who do not attend their closest school are required to pay to catch the bus. In most cases, this will mean paying to catch the bus to their closest school and the link bus to WBHS. Pay buses are typically $3.00 per trip. 10 trip concession tickets can be purchased from drivers for $25.
The Ministry of Education provides transport assistance (free bus service or a conveyance allowance) for students who live more than 4.8km from the nearest secondary school, at which they are entitled to enrol. To obtain a conveyance allowance an application needs to be submitted to the Ministry of Education. Further information can be found on the Ministry’s website: https://parents.education.govt.nz/secondary-school/your-child-at-school/school-transport-assistance/
The bus run for a student is printed on their student ID card. This is to be carried with them to prove their entitlement to travel on the school bus. Student ID cards are issued during Term 1, free of charge, to all new students.

Detailed route information and maps for WBHS buses are available on the school website: https://wbhs.school.nz/about/transport-to-school/ Students are given information regarding bus routes during a special assembly at the beginning of the year. It is important that students attend this assembly if they will need to catch a school bus.
