Students who bike to school are expected to follow New Zealand traffic rules and wear approved safety helmets. On arrival at school bicycles must be left in the bike compound. Students are responsible for securing their bicycles.
A number of buses provided by Ritchies Transport are controlled by Whangarei Boys’ High School. These serve outlying areas around Whangarei. The southernmost point serviced by these buses is the Maungakaramea turn-off. Transport further south (Waipu/Ruakaka/Bream Bay) is provided by Leabourn Passenger Services.
Students who do not attend their closest school are required to pay for bus travel. In most cases this will mean paying to board the bus to their closest school and the link bus to WBHS. Paid bus travel is typically $3 per trip. Concession tickets can be purchased from drivers.
The Ministry of Education provides a free bus service, or a conveyance allowance, for students who live more than 4.8km from the nearest secondary school at which they are entitled to enrol. Application for the Conveyance Allowance needs to be submitted to the Ministry of Education. Application forms are available from the School’s Bus Controller. Further information can be found on the Ministry’s website: https://parents.education.govt.nz/secondary-school/your-child-at-school/school-transport-assistance/
The bus run is printed on the student’s ID card. The ID card must be presented to the driver each time to prove entitlement to travel on the school bus. Student ID cards are issued free of charge to all students early during Term 1.

*The Kamo-Link bus services those students attending WBHS who also need to use a Kamo High school bus. A 10-trip ticket ($25) or a single ride $3.00 is available for purchase at the WBHS or KHS main offices.
Students who live in Kamo can NOT catch the Kamo-Link bus – they need to take the Tikipunga/Kamo/Three Mile Bush/Dip Road bus.
Students are given information regarding bus routes during a special assembly at the beginning of the year. It is important that students attend this assembly if they will need to use school buses.
Ms Lisa Ross (WBHS Bus Controller) has responsibility for buses. Any queries relating to buses should be directed to her email: [email protected]
