Careers and Transitions

Whangarei Boys High School gave me confidence and friends. The business courses were really good. At WBHS it was quite easy to be yourself and grow that way. -- Gareth Mauchline, Creative Director, Channel North.

Gateway Programme and Career Transition

Each year our Gateway students gain apprenticeships or cadetships in the electrical, panel beating, joinery, engineering, and security industries.

Transitioning Students into Careers

Our skilled Careers Advisor is available for a range of services including subject and career planning, and for information about tertiary options and scholarships. A number of programmes and initiatives to support student achievement arise from the Careers Office over the course of the year including field trips and school-based presentations.

Gateway Work Placement Programme

Each year as part of the Gateway programme at WBHS, up to 100 students take advantage of opportunities to work with businesses across a broad range of industries. Supportive employers willingly take students on placement and as a result Gateway is an extraordinarily successful programme for the boys, helping them understand the importance of what they are being offered in the classroom, particularly in Mathematics, English and Science, which can easily be underrated.

To learn more about the Gateway Programme call (09) 470-0192 or email [email protected]

The Gateway programme is designed to clarify the path students take from school to workplace learning and employment. It is available to any boy in the Senior School who is keen to explore an employment pathway and is preparing himself for work. A Gateway experience provides young people with valuable learning and assessment in real workplaces, and helps them make decisions about the future. It also allows employers an obligation-free opportunity to consider students as prospective employees. Each year our Gateway students gain apprenticeships or cadetships in the electrical, panel beating, joinery, engineering, and security industries.
