Inclusive Learning – Special Programmes
The Inclusive Learning Faculty at WBHS is committed to establishing a secure, encouraging, and student-focused atmosphere that fosters the academic advancement of every student. This is accomplished through proficiently allocating resources, strategising, and providing educational assistance that is customised to meet the individual needs of our students. Furthermore, we emphasise the importance of cultivating positive connections with students, their families, and all external agencies.
Our team of learning support coordinators, specialist teachers, and learning support assistants collaborate effectively to cater to students with diverse educational needs, sensory requirements, health considerations, neurodiversity, and exceptional abilities.
Individual Educational Plans (referred to as Hāpai Ako) are designed for students requiring follow-up and support. They incorporate student and whānau input to develop strategies aimed at supporting both the student and their teachers, while setting achievable goals for the students to strive towards.
Supported Learning
In our junior school, supported learning classes have a more personalised approach to learning. We focus on relevance and meaning whilst enhancing literacy and numeracy skills and empowering students to achieve success at their own pace and level. These classes have a specialist core class teacher who provides an alternative, differentiated curriculum tailored for up to 13 students in each class.
In our senior school, we offer a Supported Learning multi-level class. This environment provides students who may face challenges in the wider school setting with an opportunity to attain an NZQA recognised qualification upon leaving WBHS. This is a two-year program available to selected students in Years 11 and 12. Eligibility also extends to Year 13 students who are ORS funded.
CR8 Space
CR8 space is facilitated within the Inclusive Learning Faculty by one of our Learning Support Coordinators. This program offers students a therapeutic safe environment to explore various art and craft materials in an open-ended manner. The emphasis is placed on the process of exploring thoughts, ideas, and emotions, rather than on creating a final product. Students can express themselves non-verbally and receive support in addressing any challenges, or problems that may arise. Currently, the program is available exclusively to junior students.
LEGO Masters
LEGO Masters, an evidence-based model, is utilised to enhance social communication skills among a diverse group of students. These weekly sessions are led by a certified LEGO therapy facilitator. Each session involves three roles, each serving a distinct purpose within the team. This collaborative approach encourages the expression of ideas and fosters effective communication among participants. By combining hands-on activities with a shared enthusiasm for LEGO, the therapy supports the development of problem-solving skills through various strategies. This approach has proven successful in boosting students’ confidence, refining their social abilities, and inspiring the creation of impressive LEGO builds. Currently, the program is available exclusively to junior students.
Literacy
The Literacy program offers small-group learning tailored to meet each student’s specific needs. Led by the Literacy Coordinator, a team of specialised Learning Support Assistants deliver a range of programs aimed at strengthening fundamental literacy skills. The focus is on providing personalised instruction that improves decoding, comprehension, and vocabulary. Our team continually expands their expertise through professional development, ensuring we stay updated with the latest scientific evidence on reading instruction. Currently, the program is available exclusively to junior students.
Special Assessment Conditions
Special assessment conditions (SAC) are provided to qualifying students, ensuring equitable access to assessments and examinations regardless of neurodiversity, health needs, or specific diagnoses. Available supports include access to a reader, writer, computer, separate accommodation, rest breaks, and additional time, among others. These accommodations aim to create a level playing field, enabling all students to demonstrate their knowledge and abilities effectively.
Gifted and Talented
At WBHS, our approach to supporting gifted and talented students is comprehensive and tailored to meet their diverse needs. We implement a range of strategies aimed at providing effective differentiation:
We offer an individualised timetable structure that empowers students to choose courses aligned with their specific interests and abilities. This flexibility ensures they receive the most suitable educational experience.
Additionally, students may benefit from individual or small group plans designed to address their unique learning preferences and goals. This personalised approach enables them to engage in opportunities that best support their academic and personal growth.
Our differentiated teaching and learning programs are crafted to provide students with choices, fostering self-management skills and facilitating accelerated learning where appropriate. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their educational journey.
For those who demonstrate exceptional ability in specific subjects, we offer subject acceleration opportunities starting from Year 9 through to senior school. This allows gifted students to progress at a pace that challenges and engages them appropriately.
Furthermore, extracurricular activities are integrated into our approach to further develop students’ talents and interests outside of the traditional classroom setting.
The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Programme at WBHS is designed to:
- Challenge students intellectually, fostering an environment that encourages risk-taking and develops creative and critical thinking skills.
- Support the social, emotional, and cultural needs of our gifted students, ensuring a holistic approach to their education.
- Provide differentiated programming that reflects current research and best practices in gifted education, catering specifically to the needs of gifted learners.
- Collaborate closely with students and their families to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that nurtures excellence and individual growth.
Through these initiatives, WBHS is committed to empowering gifted and talented students to reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
