International Students are welcome to enrol and start school at any time during the school year. Normally the New Zealand high school year begins at the end of January and ends early December.

We are a culturally diverse school with students from all over Northland. Ours is a culturally responsive and welcoming environment dedicated to the development of strong inter-cultural relationships within the school and with our sister schools in Japan and China.

Whangārei Boys’ High School has one of the best outdoor education programmes in the country with the opportunity to experience many disciplines and travel to outdoor pursuit competitions. Our Golf Academy is ground-breaking with professionals and related technology all available.

Our high calibre science-based education regularly sees students excel beyond national standards and their academic outcomes surpass those of all other New Zealand boys’ schools.

Please download and read our International Student Application Information, then click the current Application form and Contract of Enrolment.

We are happy to help if you have questions or need assistance to fill out the forms.  We work with many education agents around the world and will gladly recommend one to you.

Whangārei Boys’ High School welcomes between 10 and 15 international students every year from all around the world.

We offer long term and short stay options, with sporting and outdoor education programmes such as golf, scuba diving and surfing, along with ESOL classes and a wide range of academic classes.

Our students are looked after by a dedicated and supportive International Team to ensure they enjoy the best Northland has to offer.

Our on-site Golf Academy and boarding hostel set us apart from other schools in the region.

Accommodation & support

International students stay with a New Zealand homestay family.

Many of our students make life long friends with the people they stay with, often returning to visit long after they leave school.

The International Student Centre provides students with a wide range of services from help with choosing subjects, insurance and help with obtaining visas.

The Director of International Students is available 24 hours a day for students, agents and parents and can assist with any homestay or accommodation queries.

Where are we?

Whangārei is a two hour drive from Auckland or 30 minutes by air. It is New Zealand’s northernmost city and the warmest. The school itself is situated on 38 acres in a very picturesque setting surrounded by the bush-clad hills of Whangārei, a city of about 80,500 people. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the city centre.

Whangārei offers a safe, friendly community environment that can provide students with a wide range of educational opportunities as well as many new and exciting outdoor activities.

What kind of school is WBHS?

Whangārei Boys’ High School is a progressive boys school with its sights firmly set on the future whilst keeping an eye on the rich history and traditions of the past.

Whangārei Boys’ High School offers a very wide range of academic and vocational courses, details of which may be found in the school curriculum.

Non – English speaking students who require extra help are supported by qualified and experienced specialist teachers and we offer ESOL classes at three levels.

Where will I live?

International students will live with a New Zealand homestay family.

Many of our students make lifelong friends with the people they stay with, often returning to visit long after they leave school.

The school offers an extensive choice of sports teams; athletics, badminton, hockey, shooting, sailing, football and rugby are just a few of the sports that students take part in.

The school has produced several world-class sportsmen and many of our international students have represented the school in a variety of sports.

We have an active cultural scene with a drama group, school choir, orchestra and bands providing regular performances.

There are frequent opportunities to socialise with international students from other schools on our many trips.
