Pursuing outdoor sporting excellence

WBHS has introduced sport-specific training for Year 9 students. Integrating outdoor sport and sports in general, with the curriculum offers extraordinary human development potential in concert with feeding the intellect, and provides the boys with a deeper understanding of sport, nutrition, kinesiology, and various other aspects supporting the pursuit of sporting excellence. The school counts among its great sportsmen, Pero Cameron, ex Tall Blacks Captain, and Adam Blair, NZ Rugby League Captain.

A popular outdoor pursuit at Whangārei Boys’ High School is the Get2Go Challenge. Working with Whangārei Girls’ High School, WBHS won the top Get2Go title on three occasions between 2006 and 2016.

Get2Go is an all-day race consisting of a combination of orienteering and rogaining, and includes mystery activities such as Mountain Biking to add to the challenge. The event is organised by Hillary Outdoors with expert assistance from local outdoors enthusiasts. The goal is to navigate to as many checkpoints as possible, complete mystery activities, and make it back to the finish line before the clock runs down.

Our Get2Go team was selected from over 100 students and having beaten 400 other secondary school teams made it to the Grand Final on Great Barrier Island 3-8 December 2017.

The Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre Hillary Challenge is also a popular outdoor pursuit supported by the School. The WBHS and WGHS team compete with the 12 best schools in the country at the base of Mt Ruapehu near Turangi. Over five intensely action-packed days, our students compete in abseiling, rope skills, kayaking, mountain biking, climbing, problem solving and general knowledge, along with camping overnight and learning how to use maps and compass. We are proud to be the Hillary Challenge winners of 2016 and the runners-up in 2018.

Sports codes and facilities

Whangārei Boys’ High School has first-class sporting facilities.

Summer sporting facilities include our in-situ full size swimming pool, six tennis courts, and two cricket pitches (grass and artificial).

Winter sports facilities include two rugby fields and a football field in a magnificent park-like setting. Also available are two well-equipped gymnasia for Badminton, Basketball, Futsal, Table Tennis and Volleyball, plus a well-equipped weight-training room.

Regular Saturday competitions and a variety of inter-school exchange opportunities exist across a range of sports. Besides the major sports, boys are able to participate in many other activities.

An emphasis on Outdoor Education is centred round a senior snowboarding trip every year, the Hillary Challenge, and Get2Go at an Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

The school also makes regular use of Sport Northland’s Kensington Complex and the nearby Northland Hockey Association’s artificial turf.
