Beach Volleyball
Over Waitangi weekend WBHS had two Year 11 Beach volleyball teams playing at the NZ Secondary Schools Beach Volleyball Champs at Mount Maunganui. This is a huge tournament with many athletes from Year 11 upwards attending and was the first time WBHS has sent teams due to the last few years being cancelled due to COVID.
Year 11 students Caleb and Phayme George teamed up together and made the top 12 of the Year 11 grade. They had a few wins followed by a few losses to end up finishing in 12th position – an extremely good result in their first tournament.
Some great serving by both players and great setting by Phayme followed by smart shot selection by Caleb showed the boys have a lot of potential on the sand.
Cooper Mounter and Luke Salmon were the other WBHS team and had some tough first up games. They battled hard and ended up with a 17th place finish. Cooper got some great pick ups as the back court player and Luke showed lots of athleticism at the net.
Coach Suzy McAsey won the CALTEX GOOD SPORT award for her support and coaching of the boys.
